Facebook’s new Places service opens up an even more complex VGP-BPS8 and interconnected world of location-based social media in addition to a huge can of worms around privacy. Just another day in the life of Facebook, then. Once again Mark Zuckerberg has activated a new feature on the social network for all users, forcing them to opt-out instead of giving them the choice to opt-in. It’s no surprise that people are taking exception to that.
At the moment, the only app with VGP-BPS9/B Places integrated is on the iPhone. Android and BlackBerry users can access it from touch.facebook.com for now, as can users on non-mobile browsers. The service hasn’t rolled out in every U.S. region just yet (here in NYC we’re still getting the “This feature will be available soon” message) but once it does users who opt to use the service will be able to share where they are with friends, businesses, advertisers, even applications. Friends will be able to check other friends in, another feature I don’t see a use for. If I don’t check in myself, why would I Dell Studio 1535 Battery want someone to do so for me?I’d be interested in hearing from anyone who sees potential in this.
Yelp, Foursquare, and Gowalla can push updates to Places now as well. While I like the idea Sony VGP-BPS9A/B Battery of consolidating all of my social media information into one stream, I’m know I’m not the only one annoyed when Foursquare auto-publishes to Twitter. A flood of check-ins not only from my friends but friends of friends is a sure way to make me reach for the mute button on my news feed.
Though Places is enabled by default, you aren’t stuck with it. As with most of Facebook’s privacy changes, there are multiple steps involved across multiple areas, so be sure to read the whole post.
For those who want to give the service a try, Mashable has a more detailed guide to using Places, including some additional tips on how to make Sony VGP-BPS13A/B Battery check-ins more private if you want to limit, but not cut off, access to good battery where you are and what you’re doing
